A bunion, medically known as Hallux valgus, is a deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe. It occurs when the big toe leans inward toward the second toe, causing a bony bump to develop on the joint. The skin over the bunion may become red and irritated, and the affected joint can be swollen and painful.

Several factors contribute to the development of bunions, including:

  • Genetics: A family history of bunions can increase the likelihood of developing this deformity.
  • Footwear: Wearing shoes that are too tight or have narrow, pointed toe boxes can squeeze the toes together and contribute to bunion formation.
  • Foot Structure: Certain foot shapes and structures may predispose individuals to bunions.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions such as arthritis can increase the risk of bunion development.

Common symptoms of bunions include pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty with shoe wear. While conservative measures like proper footwear, orthotics, and pain management can help alleviate symptoms, severe cases may require surgical intervention (bunionectomy) to realign the toe and remove the bony prominence.

It’s advisable for individuals experiencing bunion-related symptoms to seek advice from a healthcare professional, such as a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon, for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management plan.
